Romelia C.
Teacher and Builder of Schools
In 2008, Romelina Cruz was a single mother of four, living in a crowded home with extended family and little formal education. She had left school at age ten and never returned — until hope arrived in the form of a school being built on her brother’s donated land. Hired by Principio as a cook and janitor, Romelina threw herself into every task. But it was when she began helping the teacher that something awakened in her — a quiet, persistent dream she hadn’t dared to speak aloud: she wanted to teach. Principio saw her potential and invested in it, paying for weekend bus rides to the city so she could study for her high school diploma, then for four more years of university. She worked weekdays and studied weekends. And when she graduated, she became the lead teacher of Escuela Perla, the same school where she once swept floors. Along the way, Romelina built her own home with the help of her community, and her school was adopted into the national education system, giving her stable income and greater reach. Today, she doesn’t just teach, she helps establish schools in other remote villages, pouring into others the same belief someone once poured into her.
Dalila M
Ascended to the Supreme Court
Dalila grew up in the remote Honduran village of Rancho Quemado, rising early to cook and clean for the men harvesting coffee during the busy season. Though she graduated high school with honors, her dreams of more were shelved, as there was no money, no path forward. So she returned home to work again, earning little more than room and board. But when she was accepted into university through the Principio Community Fund, everything changed. She chose law—boldly—and began a journey that would lift her from the fields to the halls of justice. Dalila graduated early, with honors, and opened her own law practice in Yoro. Her integrity and excellence caught the attention of the state’s highest court, and she was soon invited to serve as Clerk of the Supreme Court. Today, Dalila is not only a legal leader — she’s a wife, a mother, a homeowner, and a woman whose children now enjoy bilingual education and global opportunity. Her influence and income have grown beyond what she once believed possible. Her story is living proof that when you plant seeds of opportunity, entire generations rise.
Anna-Lee
TropicalBerry Powered Her First Steps
Anna-Lee was born with cerebral palsy in a remote Honduran village, unable to sit up, stand, or take a single step on her own. In a place where access to medical care is scarce, her future felt heartbreakingly limited. But Principio stepped in—connecting Anna-Lee with a doctor two hours away who specialized in early intervention. They covered her travel and treatments, and most importantly, gave her family something no one else had: a reason to hope. That hope became fuel. Her mother followed the home therapy routines faithfully. Anna-Lee did the exercises every day. And slowly, impossibly—her world began to change. She learned to lift her own head. Then, one day, she took her first steps, with her mother by her side. Steps that once felt unreachable. Today, Anna-Lee continues to grow stronger. Her story is not just about movement—it’s about momentum. And it all began with one act of compassion that said, “You are not forgotten.”
